About the URL Encoder & Decoder

URLs can only contain a limited set of ASCII characters. Everything else, such as spaces, accents, & or =, must be percent-encoded (for example a space becomes %20).

This URL encoder and decoder converts text to and from percent-encoding in your browser, using encodeURIComponent for query values or encodeURI for full URLs.

How to use it

  1. Paste a URL or a query parameter value.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode, and component or full URL mode.
  3. Copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is URL encoding?

Percent-encoding replaces unsafe characters with % followed by two hexadecimal digits of the UTF-8 bytes, as defined in RFC 3986.

encodeURI vs encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI keeps URL structure characters such as : / ? & = intact. encodeURIComponent encodes them too and should be used for individual query values.

Why does a space appear as + or %20?

%20 is the standard encoding. + represents a space only in application/x-www-form-urlencoded form data.

Does it support Unicode?

Yes. Characters are encoded as UTF-8 byte sequences.
